INTRODUCTION:
· A project team consists of engineers of all the departments involved in project execution.
· It includes the project manager along with the necessary support staff.
· Any team has a list of common goals to be achieved and a project team is no exception. Its goals are clear.
· To complete the project in as efficient a way as possible. This means that not only should the schedule be adhered to, but the man- hour consumption should also be minimised.
· In addition the quality of work shall be of the highest order. Thus there should be no scope for mistakes and repetitions shall be avoided at all costs.
· Interdisciplinary communication and information transfer should be fast and unambiguous.
· To facilitate the above, all members of the project team are normally accommodated in a common seating arrangement.
PROJECT TEAM:
· A project team is formed when the engineering work for a project is about to start.
· It consists of the lead engineers of all the disciplines along with the project manager and the supporting staff.
· The concerned departments appoint the lead engineers. They are responsible for the schedule, control of man-hours and the quality of work. If required, they are supported by additional manpower drawn from the department pool.
· They report to the project manager who is responsible for the overall project implementation.
· The project manager is the interface between company and the clients as well as between the project team and the company management.
· He is advised on other non-technical matters by other departments like cost control, planning, commercial, etc.
· The block diagram on below illustrates in brief, the concept of a project team.
TASK FORCE
· A ‘task force’ concept is similar to a ‘project team’ concept. The differences are minor and of an academic nature.
· The term ‘task force’ is used when the project size is large necessitating a big team, whereas the term ‘project team’ is used for small and medium size projects.
· An ‘engineering manager’ is assigned to a task force to closely monitor different engineering activities and to ensure close co-ordination between different disciplines.
· This ensures smooth flow of information and considerably reduces the burden on the project manager, who can devote his energies for overall co-ordination.
· In a ‘project team’ an engineering manager is not assigned and the project manager has to perform these duties.
· This is illustrated in a block diagram below.
ROLE OF IC IN A PROJECT
· Role of IC group in a project team or a task force is identical. Only the quantum of work varies.
· Block diagram below gives detail about the various activities performed, the documents generated and the sequence followed for various activities.
· Above block diagram shows “E” of EPC (Engineering Procurement & Construction).
· This is a block diagram of detailed engineering documentation.
· Primary data (P&ID and process data) is provided by Chemical engineers.
· Based upon those data different documentations are made. Such as data sheet, hook-up drawing & BOM(bill of material), JB termination etc.
